Is private property towing legal in Missouri?

Yes, when done right. Missouri's private-property towing statute (RSMo 304.157) sets three paths: a vehicle abandoned on owner-occupied residential property of 4 units or fewer can be towed once police are notified and 10 hours pass; on any other private property, once police are notified and 96 hours pass; or, if the lot has compliant signage, no wait or notification is required at all. Signs must be at least 17 by 22 inches with 1-inch lettering, state that vehicles are removed at the owner's expense, and disclose the maximum towing and storage fee plus a phone number for the vehicle's location. Towing in violation of this statute is a class C misdemeanor. We follow it on every property we patrol.

Do you work with HOAs?

Yes. HOAs are our most common private-property client. We audit the existing signage, update the parking rules with the board, and set a patrol schedule that fits the community. Board members do not make the call, our dispatchers do, per the agreed rules. That keeps the board out of personal liability.

Can I call to tow a specific car in my lot?

If there is a signed property management agreement, yes. The property manager (or a designated contact) calls dispatch, confirms the vehicle and the violation, and we respond. Without an agreement on file, we cannot legally tow from a property we do not patrol.

What if a resident forgets their permit and gets towed?

They pay the release fee at our lot and get the car back, with full paperwork. It is rare, we only tow after the wait time and sign check. If a resident calls in a good-faith mistake (permit in glove box, etc.), we handle releases professionally and document the situation. Property managers can also preauthorize per-vehicle exceptions.

What if my car was towed by Springfield Police, not by you?

That's a different process. Springfield runs police-ordered tows through a single city contractor, Henry's Towing Service, under the current city contract. Call SPD Headquarters at (417) 864-1810 (Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) to confirm there's no investigative hold, then pick up a release form in person at SPD Headquarters (321 E. Chestnut Expressway) or the South District Station (2620 W. Battlefield Road) with a photo ID and proof of ownership. From there you pay Henry's Towing directly at their Brookline lot. We're not affiliated with the city contract, but once your car is released, call us for the tow.
